Your body depends on your heart and kidneys for different but important jobs. When you have heart failure or chronic kidney disease (CKD), those organs don’t work the way they should. This can cause fluid to collect in parts of your body, which is called “fluid buildup.”
Fluid buildup is common in people with heart failure or CKD and can happen even when following your care plan. When fluid starts to build up, the symptoms it can cause may make you feel discomfort.
Since heart failure and CKD are both lifelong conditions, you may experience fluid buildup symptoms more than once. If fluid buildup keeps happening, it can cause more damage to your heart or kidneys and make your illness worse.
It may be possible to avoid these risks by watching for any signs or symptoms of fluid buildup—like those listed below—and alerting your care team right away.
mostly in the feet, ankles, legs, fingers, and stomach area
during activity
or discomfort when lying down
Quick weight gain is often the first sign that fluid has started collecting in your body. However, everyone is different, so make sure you know all the possible signs of fluid buildup.
To treat fluid buildup, your care team may give you oral diuretics, also known as water pills. However, sometimes fluid buildup can’t be managed by oral diuretics alone, even when they are increased or changed. This happens because the fluid that has built up is preventing your body from absorbing all the medicine it needs. To get around this, your care team may try a medicine that is not taken by mouth and instead goes more directly into your bloodstream. Often, this is done with intravenous (IV) diuretics at a hospital or clinic. However, there is an at-home treatment option that works just like IV diuretics.
If at-home treatments aren’t working, IV treatment at the hospital might be needed
People who have fluid buildup stay in the hospital 4 days on average
A person’s condition may worsen each time they are hospitalized
Hospital trips can be a strain on you and your caregivers
IV treatment may be avoided with an option that works as well but is taken easily and at home.
